Sun Breaks on Wicehtowak Solar

August 28, 2025by Admin

On August 26, 2025, against the open horizon near Bethune, not far from Regina, SK, the Wicehtowak Solar Project officially broke ground. This 100 % Indigenous-owned initiative, championed by George Gordon First Nation through Wicehtowak Solar Ltd., is set to deliver 32 MW of clean, bi-facial solar power directly to the K+S Bethune Potash mine

“Wicehtowak Solar represents what’s possible when Indigenous leadership and industrial innovation come together.”  – Don Ross, CEO of George Gordon Developments Ltd.

Leveraging the SaskPower Renewable Access Service (RAS), the project marks Saskatchewan’s first private-to-industry electricity model—delivering clean energy via the grid under a 30-year Power Purchase Agreement to K+S.

Powered by over $33 million in federal support via the Smart Renewables and Electrification Pathways Program (SREPs), along with nearly $432,400 in funding from Indigenous Services Canada.

It’s not just about energy—it’s about self-determined growth, sustainable infrastructure, and proof that reconciliation and innovation can coexist, grounded in respect and community. The project boosts regional jobs, strengthens energy sovereignty, and cements the role of Indigenous-led clean energy in Canada’s future.
